Susan Work is an incredible Interior Designer and owns an architectural design shop with her husband Ben, called Homework. I first met Susan when I did the flowers for her wedding and we became fast friends. Her style is effortlessly chic and unexpected in all the best ways. Susan met her husband in New York while working as designers in the commercial and hospitality worlds and a few years after moving to San Francisco they started their own firm which is located in a corten-steel-clad office in Mill Valley. They are known for their jewel-tones, mixing complementary colors, dramatic natural lighting and shadows, and exposed brick/beams/bulbs.
1. What was your best career moment or your first big break?
Getting hired to partner with esteemed industry colleagues to work on one of California’s largest estates.
2. Whether big or small, what was the last trip you took?
A 2-week Asian tour through Japan and China for project inspiration and to visit our best friends.
3. What was the most influential year in your life so far? What made it special?
My life completely changed last year. Upon starting our own design company we’ve been humbled by wonderful opportunities to create architecture and interior spaces for some movers and shakers of the world. Simultaneously we bought a house which we’re working on fixing up now and can’t wait to move into!
4. Who is someone that inspires you?
Anna Korkobcova. Not only is she spunky, an imaginative artist, humorous, and creative, but I’m lucky enough to have her on my team and on this journey with me to be challenged to dream up meaningful design.
5. If you were to throw a party tonight, what flowers would be on the table?
The wild, rich, and unruly variety.. and tree branches. Okay, maybe not on the table but perhaps hanging from the ceiling?
Thank you, Susan!
